April 10 Notes

Your subway map of the circulatory system is due on Thursday.

On Thursday we will begin with the following question:

What is the purpose of the oval window and arterial duct by-passes in the fetal circulation?

You will have 5 minutes to write your answer.

April 10 Assignment Extension

The circulatory system subway map assignment due date is extended from April 10 until April 12.  Tomorrow we will continue practicing taking blood pressure, then we will review some major blood vessels.
This review will help you to edit and add detail to your subway map.

Today we talked about the heartbeat and the cardiac cycle.  Notes can be found here.

• All circulatory system content covered up until the break (functions of the circulatory system, blood vessels, anatomy of the heart (chambers and valves), and the path of blood through the heart
• Practice questions are on today's notes found above.

Homework due April 10:

Create a map of the circulatory system as an analogy for a subway system with stations.  The stations are the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, etc. 

• Show arteries and veins as different pathways, and indicate the direction of flow
• Include areas of the body as stations (feet, liver, intestines, etc.)
• Include the heart as 4 different stations (4 chambers of the heart)
• The subway map is drawn neatly, colours are used to differentiate between veins and arteries
  

Homework from March 12

Create a venn triagram, or another 3 category graphic organizer to
Compare and contrast the 3 types of blood vessels.
Include:

• Direction of blood flow
• General appearance
• Blood pressure
• Wall thickness
• Relative oxygen concentraton
• Presence/absence of valves

Introduction to the Circulatory System and Anatomy of the Heart

Heart Dissection Pre-lab Questions:

Due Monday

1. Why are pig hearts used to study the anatomy of the human heart?
2.  How many chambers are found in the heart?  What other group of organisms would have this same number of chambers?
3. Which chambers are the pumping chambers of the heart?
4. Which chambers are the receiving chambers of the heart?
5. What is the purpose of heart valves?
6. Why is the blood on the right and left sides of the heart not allowed to mix?
